Company history

In the 1990s Royal Ahold embarked on an ambitious global expansion. After an accounting scandal it was forced to contract. It sold some of its businesses in the United States and withdrew altogether from certain countries.

Royal Ahold is the fourth largest retail based company in the world after Wal-Mart, Carrefour and Home Depot. A large part of its turnover is from foodservice, and on the basis of retail sales alone it would rank a few places lower.

Finance

2004 1st quarter

In First quarter 2004 Ahold recorded net loss of 405 million €. The result was partly a result of trying to ditch an accounting scandal by selling of functions in Brazil and Thailand. Sales declined 11% to 15,4 billion € in the 1st quarter . Net debts were 7,1 billion € in the end of the quarter
