Adair, Iowa

Adair is a city located in Adair County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 839.

History

Adair was the scene of the first successful train robbery in the American West when on July 21, 1873 the James-Younger gang (led by Jesse James) took US$3,000 from the Rock Island Express which was stopped in the city.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²). 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.90% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 839 people, 366 households, and 214 families residing in the city. The population density is 147.2/km² (381.1/mi²). There are 404 housing units at an average density of 70.9/km² (183.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 99.05% White, 0.00% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.24% from two or more races. 1.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 366 households out of which 26.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% are married couples living together, 5.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.5% are non-families. 39.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.17 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 23.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,319, and the median income for a family is $42,847. Males have a median income of $27,083 versus $22,941 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,557. 6.5% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.3% of those under the age of 18 and 8.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
