Julius Caesar

  • "Veni, vidi, vici."
    • Translation: "I came, I saw, I conquered."
    • Written in a report to Rome 47 B.C. after conquering Farnakes at Zela in Asia Minor in just five days.
  • "Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres."
    • Translation: All Gaul is divided into three parts
    • Statement at the opening line of his Commentaries on the Gallic Wars.
  • "De omnis Belgae fortissimi sunt."
    • Translation: Of all these, the Belgians are the bravest/strongest .
    • The meaning here has to be sought in the fact that the Belgian tribes were less civilised than the other tribes, who lived more to the south, closer to the Roman Provences in the south of France, he explains this in the next lines.
  • "Alea iacta est."
    • Translation: "The dice is cast."
    • Said when crossing the river Rubicon with his legions, thus beginning the civil war that ended the Roman Republic and created the Roman Empire. The Rubicon river was the boundary of Gaul, the province Caesar had the authority to keep his army in. By crossing the river, he had committed an invasion of Rome.

  • "It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience."
  • "Tu quoque, Brute, fili mi?"
    • Translation: "You too, Brutus, my son?"
    • Appeared in William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar as "Et tu, Brute" ("And even you, Brutus?"), though Caesar's actual last words are unknown. They have been reported to be Greek, not Latin: "Kai su, teknon?" meaning "And you, child?"
