Winthrop University (formerly Winthrop College) is an American public, four-year liberal arts college in Rock Hill, South Carolina, within the greater Charlotte, North Carolina, metropolitan area. Winthrop University was originally founded as a women's college in the late 19th century. In 2003, WU had an enrollment of about 6,500 students.
In 2005, the Winthrop University men's basketball team did well enough to earn a slot in the NCAA Championship series.
