Webley

Webley is the name of a famous handgun manufacturer from Birmingham in the United Kingdom

History

In the 19th Century Birmingham was the centre of British firearm manufacture.

Founded by William Davies, who made bullet moulds. Taken over in 1834 by Philip Webley, his son-in-law, who changed to the production of guns, most famously revolvers.

In 1897 amalgamated with W & C Scott and Sons to become The Webley and Scott Revolver and Arms Company Ltd of Birmingham.

In 1906 shortened name to Webley and Scott Ltd

Webley provided revolvers in both World Wars. Between the wars the introduction of the Firearms act limiting availability of handguns to civilians led to the development of their first air pistol in 1924.

Webley stopped producing firarms in the late 1970's and returned to air gun manufacture.

The Boxer took the most powerful hand gun cartridge of the day - the .577 Boxer.

  • The Webley No. 1

Nicknamed 'The Peacemaker of the British Empire' Available in 0.450 0.476 and 0.455 inch calibres. The standard handgun of the British Army from 1887 to 1963.

Used by British troops in both World wars
