Valeri Brumel

Valeri Brumel (April 14, 1942 - January 26, 2003) was a Soviet athlete in the high jump. He was the silver medalist of the 1960 Summer Olympics (Rome, 2m 16cm), Olympic champion (1964, Tokyo, 2m 18cm), European champion (1962), and champion of the USSR (1961-63). He held the World record from 1961-71 and improved on his own mark 6 times; the latest, 2.28 m, was achieved in 1963. In 1965 Brumel suffered a leg trauma in a traffic accident which effectively ended his sports career - he struggled to regain his form for 6 years, eventually reaching 2.10 m. In the later years became an author of two non-fiction books, as well as a novel, a play and a libretto for an operetta, all based on his own biography.
