Vacuum arc

A vacuum arc arises when the surface of metal electrodes in contact with a good vacuum begin to emit electrons because of heating or through exceeding the metal's Work function. Once initiated, a vaccum arc can persist because the freed particles will heat the metal surface via high speed particle collisions, freeing more particles and continuing the arc.
