University of Dallas

The University of Dallas, founded in 1956, is a private, Catholic liberal arts university. The school is located on a 744 acre (3 km²) suburban campus in Irving, Texas (12 miles (19 km) from downtown Dallas). The shool is sometimes called "The Catholic University for Independent Thinkers".

The University offers undergraduate degree programs through the Constantin College of Liberal Arts; undergraduate and graduate degrees in business from the College of Business; and doctorate and master's programs in the humanities through the Braniff Graduate School of Liberal Arts.

Students

The school is attended by 1,250 undergraduate students and 1,569 graduate students. About 54% of all students are male and 62% of the students live in college-owned, operated, or affiliated housing. Tuition and fees for the 2004-05 academic year are $19,162 and room and board is $6,736. In 2003 the University offered $3.5 million in scholarships to students. More than 60% of undergraduates go on to graduate school, and the rate of acceptance for medical school and law school applicants is more than 90%.

Academics

All undergraduate students at the University of Dallas study a Core Curriculum, a series of specific courses that emphasizes the great ideas, deeds, and works of Western civilization from classical to modern times. This includes reading many of the "Great Books" in their entirety. After the core curriculum, students then go on to pursue their chosen major. The University of Dallas offers 18 different academic programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree.

Faculty

The University of Dallas has 80 full-time faculty members and 35 part-time faculty members. 86% of the faculty have earned a Ph.D. and the school has a student/faculty ration of 13:1.
