University of Bologna

The University of Bologna (UniversitÓ di Bologna, UNIBO) is a university in Bologna, Italy. The university received a charter from Frederick I Barbarossa (1158); but, appears to have existed since, at least, the 1080s, making it perhaps the first and most long-lived university in the western world, and second only to Cairo's Al Azhar University in global antiquity. The University of Bologna is historically notable for its teaching of canon and civil law.
