Uluj Ali

Ulaj Ali (also, Uluj or 'Uluj, in Turkish: Uluç Ali Pasha). 16th century Muslim Ottoman admiral and privateer.

Born Italian Giovanni Dionigi, he fell prisoner to Khair ad Din.

He eventually became ruler of Algiers, and in 1568 attempted to return Spain from Christian rule by sending a fleet of 40 ships laden with supplies and arms. The fleet failed to reach its destination because of winter gales.

In 1571, he was on the left flank of the Ottoman fleet that was defeated in the Battle of Lepanto. He managed to save part of the fleet and return it to Istanbul.

In 1574, he managed to retake Tunisia from the Spaniards, who took it after the Battle of Lepanto.
