The Mummy (1999 movie)

The Mummy is a 1999 movie written and directed by Stephen Sommers and starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, with Arnold Vosloo as the reanimated mummy of the title.

It is a loose remake of The Mummy (1932), which starred Boris Karloff as the mummy.

In this version, the Mummy is a traitorous High Priest who has an affair with the pharoah's wife. They kill the pharoah when he discovers this, but Imhotep, as he is named, is buried alive with flesh-eating scarabs, under a nasty curse that would unleash pure evil if awakened and dug up. Go to the 1930's where librarian Elizabeth and her idiot brother contact a prisoner, Alex O'Connell happens to know where the lost treasure and city of Hammanaptrah is. They journey with a guide, but 3 obnoxious Americans and an old associate of O'Connell, Benny, follow.Creepily, the guide is killed by some of the scarabs. Staying in the city, everyone digs up old artifacts of the Mummy that should have been left buried. Imhotep is dug up, but the Americans are targeted by the Mummy for annihilation, except for Benny, who becomes a pawn of Imhotep. Imhotep eventually brings the Apocalypse, and Liz is captured. Scariest of all, the Egyptians are hypnotized under his power, and the Americans are killed. Eventually, Imhotep's lover is ressurected. In the conclusion, Benny is eaten by the scarabs, while Imhotep is thwarted. In the cliched' ending, the trio of good guys walk into the sunset with lots of treasures.

A sequel, The Mummy Returns, was released in 2001. The Scorpion King, a spin-off featuring a character from The Mummy Returns, was released in 2002. There is also a spin-off television series, (2001), broadcast on The WB network in the United States and BBC1 and the CBBC channel in Britain.
