The Elephant Sanctuary

The Elephant Sanctuary, in Hohenwald, Tennessee, was founded in 1995 as the USA's first elephant refuge, recreating a natural habitat for sick, old, and/or needy Asian and African elephants.

The inspiration for the sanctuary was founder Carol Buckley's elephant Tarra.

Currently, the Elephant Sanctuary has 8 Asian elephants and 3 African elephants. In November 2004 it became home to two asian elephants named Lota and Misty. The came from the Hawthorn Corporation, now widely known for providing poor care for its elephants. Lota died in February 2005 of advanced tuberculosis.
