Thane is a district in northern Maharashtra in India. The capital of the district is the city of Thane. Other major cities in the region are Navi Mumbai (formerly New Bombay), Kalyan-Dombivli , Mira-Bhayander, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Dahanu , Wada and Vasai-Virar .

Thane comprises of 13 talukas. The southern talukas are the location of urban areas and hence urban Indians while the western coastal region is mostly populated by Kolis , Marathis and Gujaratis. The northern and the eastern talukas are populated by the Warli tribes, known for making stark images from red mud on house walls.
