Super Bowl XXIX

Super Bowl XXIX was played on January 29, 1995 in Miami, Florida. The San Francisco 49ers beat the San Diego Chargers 49 to 26. The combined aggregate score of 75 remains a Super Bowl record. 49ers quarterback Steve Young threw a record 6 touchdown passes en route to the Super Bowl MVP award.

This game is regarded as Young's final leap out of the shadow of his predecessor, Joe Montana, who had won four Super Bowls with the 49ers, two with Young as the backup quarterback.

The 49ers became the first team to win five Super Bowls while the Chargers were making their first Super Bowl appearance.

The game was telecast by ABC in the U.S. Al Michaels, Dan Dierdorf, and Frank Gifford called the game.

The Game

The 49ers dominated the game right from the start.

On the third play of the game, 49ers quarterback Steve Young threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Jerry Rice. Then after forcing the Chargers to punt, Young threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to running back Ricky Watters.

The Chargers finally scored on a Natrone Means 1-yard touchdown run after a 78-yard drive. But on the 49ers' next drive, Young threw his third touchdown pass to fullback William Floyd for 5-yards, increasing the lead 21-7.

With 4:45 left in the first half, Young threw his fourth touchdown pass to Watters for eight yards. The Chargers were then able to move the ball inside the 49ers' 13-yard line, but could only manage a field goal before halftime.

Leading 28-10 in the 3rd quarter, the 49ers added Watters' 9-yard touchdown run, and Young's fifth touchdown pass to Rice for 15 yards. The Chargers' only highlight of the 3rd quarter was Andre Coleman's 98-yard kickoff return and a successful two-point conversion.

Young made his record setting sixth touchdown pass to Rice with 13:49 remaining in the game to make the score 49-18. The Chargers' final touchdown, a 30-yard pass from Stan Humphries to Tony Martin, and another two-point conversion made the score 49-26.
