Steven Jesse Bernstein

Steven Jesse Bernstein (died October 11, 1991) was a performance artist who was recorded reading his poetry for Sub Pop Records by Steve Fisk.

The main result of this work, Prison, was released in April 1992. Bernstein killed himself - by slitting his own throat, having suffered from various physical and mental difficulties throughout his forty year lifetime and these are referenced in various ways on his recordings. In 1994, one of his recordings was used in the film Natural Born Killers. Most, if not all, of the readings used on Prison were recorded at a correction center in Monroe, Washington.

His name given at birth was Steven J. Bernstein. The "J" does not stand for anything. He died on Oct. 21st or 22nd. His body was found on the 22nd. He is missed. I am my own source. We were married for four years.
