The Stephens Island Wren (Xenicus lyalli) is the only known species to be entirely wiped out by a single individual. The bird was a flightless, nocturnal native of Stephens Island, New Zealand and fed on insects. It was only seen alive upon two occasions before it was eradicated by a lighthouse keeper's cat named Tibbles in 1894.
