(Redirected from St. George's Chapel)
St. George's Chapel is located in the lower ward of Windsor Castle, one of the principal residences of the Queen of the United Kingdom.
It was founded as a collegiate church in 1348 by Edward III. To this day it is a royal peculiar , existing outside the usual hierarchy of the Church of England and responsible directly to the Queen.
The present spectacular rebuilding of the chapel in perpendicular gothic was begun in 1475 during the reign of Edward IV and completed in 1528 during the reign of Henry VIII.
It is the mother church of the Order of the Garter: a special service is held in June of each year attended by the Queen and the members of the order, whose heraldic banners hang in the choir.
