Smethwick Engine

The Smethwick Engine is a steam engine made by Boulton and Watt, brought into service in May 1779.

Originally, it was used to pump water for the Birmingham Canal Navigation Company's canal at Smethwick, not far from the Soho Foundry where it was made. Its original site can still be seen, near Bridge Street in Smethwick.

It is now at the Thinktank science museum at Millennium Point in Birmingham and is the oldest working engine in the world.
