Simon Jenkins

Simon Jenkins (1943-) is a British newspaper columnist currently associated with The Guardian after fifteen years with News International titles. He received a knighthood for services to journalism in the 2004 new year honours. Among his many other awards, in 1998 he was named What the Papers Say Journalist of the Year.

He has knowledge of architecture and has written books about England's churches and country houses. He presented the Channel 4 series based on his own book, England's Thousand Best Churches.

He worked as a journalist on Country Life magazine, and The Times Educational Supplement, Evening Standard, Sunday Times and the Economist newspapers before becoming editor of The Times for two years in the early 1990's. On January 28 2005 he announced he was leaving The Times and will be joining The Guardian in the summer after a break to write a book. [1]

His other activities include deputy chairman of English Heritage (1985-1990), a member of Britain's Millennium Commission, and is Chairman of the Buildings Book Trust that sponsors Pevsner's Buildings of England guidebooks. He should not be confused with writer and designer Simon Jenkins who edits Ship of Fools (the website) where Christians can take themselves a little less seriously.

Sir Simon lives in London with his wife, actress Gayle Hunnicutt . They have one son.
