Sheridan, Wyoming

Sheridan is a city located in Sheridan County, Wyoming. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,804. It is the county seat of Sheridan County.

Geography

Sheridan is located at 44°47'48" North, 106°57'32" West (44.796720, -106.958970)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.0 km² (8.5 mi²). 22.0 km² (8.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 15,804 people, 7,005 households, and 4,062 families residing in the city. The population density is 718.7/km² (1,862.4/mi²). There are 7,413 housing units at an average density of 337.1/km² (873.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.93% White, 0.22% African American, 0.97% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 0.85% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 2.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,005 households out of which 26.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.0% are non-families. 35.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,420, and the median income for a family is $40,106. Males have a median income of $30,829 versus $19,783 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,500. 11.2% of the population and 8.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.1% of those under the age of 18 and 6.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Trivia

Sheridan is mentioned (rather briefly) in Douglas Adams' final work, The Salmon of Doubt. It is, in the book, a place where scientists think an asteroid will strike. Whether or not the asteroid actually does will never be known; Adams died before he finished the book.
