Science Olympiad
This article is about the Science Olympiad competition for secondary schools in the United States. For information on the science olympiads such as the International Physics Olympiad or the International Chemistry Olympiad, see International science olympiad.
Science Olympiad is an American high school team competition that requires knowledge of various science subjects and topics, and occasionally the ability to build things.
There are approximately twenty events in which competitors face off on a single day. Each event usually requires two members from a team of up to fifteen students, with two alternates. Most events are either knowledge-based (i.e. tests or laboratory tasks in earth science, physics, biology, and chemistry) or mechanism-based (i.e. a device that performs a specific task is built beforehand and tested at the competition). The best overall score wins.
Science Olympiad competitions occur at a regional, state and national level.
