Rock Island, Illinois

Rock Island is a city located in Rock Island County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 39,684. It is the county seat of Rock Island County6.

Part of Road to Perdition (2002) takes place in Rock Island.

The Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad was founded here in 1851 and was known as the Rock Island Line. The railroad was liquidated in bankruptcy in 1980.

Geography

Rock Island is located at 41°29'21" North, 90°34'23" West (41.489083, -90.573154)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 44.4 km² (17.1 mi²). 41.2 km² (15.9 mi²) of it is land and 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.11% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 39,684 people, 16,148 households, and 9,543 families residing in the city. The population density is 962.4/km² (2,492.0/mi²). There are 17,542 housing units at an average density of 425.4/km² (1,101.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 77.13% White, 17.17% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.75% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 2.41% from other races, and 2.19% from two or more races. 5.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,148 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% are non-families. 34.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $34,729, and the median income for a family is $45,127. Males have a median income of $32,815 versus $23,378 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,202. 14.5% of the population and 10.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.5% of those under the age of 18 and 8.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
