Richard Attenborough

Richard Samuel Attenborough, Baron Attenborough (born August 29, 1923 in Cambridge, England) is an actor and director. He was educated at Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys in Leicester and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Lord Attenborough is President of RADA and chairman of Capital Radio. He is also the elder brother of the broadcaster Sir David Attenborough.

He won the 1982 Academy Award for Directing for his motion picture epic, Gandhi.

In 1967 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, knighted in 1976 and in 1993 he was made a life peer as Baron Attenborough, of Richmond upon Thames in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

As of 2004, Lord Attenborough is the Chancellor of the Censored page. He was elected to the post on March 20, 1998, replacing the Duke of Richmond and Gordon.

He has been married to Sheila Sim since 1945 and has three children. In December 2004 his 14-year-old grand-daughter Lucy was lost in the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.
