Rice Krispies is a brand of breakfast cereal that has been produced by Kellogg's since 1928. As the name suggests, they are made of rice and are one example of a puffed grain cereal. Each Rice Krispy is produced by 'popping' the rice in a process that is similar to popcorn production.
They are marketed with the phrase "Snap, crackle, pop", which is supposed to be the sound made when milk is poured over them. The elfin characters of Snap, Crackle and Pop appear on most Rice Krispies boxes — opinion varies concerning Crackle's occupation, but Snap is always portrayed as a baker and Pop as a soldier.
As well as a cereal, Rice Krispies can be eaten as a cake held together with melted chocolate known in many parts of the world as "Chocolate Crackles". There are many variations of this, some using peanut butter or melted marshmallows as well as or instead of chocolate; in the United States, the marshmallow-only variation is most common, and is known as rice krispie treats (they can be homemade or store-bought).
Rice Krispies are known by different names depending on the country. In Australia Kellogg's sells the product under the name Rice Bubbles.
The cereal is marketed on the basis of the noises it produces when milk is added to the bowl. The onomatopoetic noises differ by language:
