Puerto Ayacucho is the capital and largest city of Amazonas state in Venezuela. Puerto Ayacucho is located across the Orinoco River from the Columbian village of Casuarito . In 1997 its population was approximately 70,000.
The inhabitants are mostly Creole -- mixed indigenous and Spanish blood. There are a number of local indigenous tribes including the Yanomami, the Bari, Piaroa , and Guajibo (also known as jibis). Puerto Ayacucho has a small airport.
