Province of South Carolina

The South Carolina Colony was originally part of the Province of Carolina, which was chartered in 1663.

The Carolinas were named for King Charles II of England. Originally a single proprietary colony, the Carolinas fell into a period of dissension, due at least in part to neglect from the heirs of the original Lords Proprietors. Beginning around 1710, the settlements in North and South Carolina could not agree upon a common government and so practically, if not formally, became separate colonies. In 1729, the two Carolinas were formally established as separate royal colonies after seven of the eight Lords Proprietors sold their shares back to the crown.
