Prayopavesha

In the Hindu religion, prayopavesha is the term for a form of suicide committed by fasting. Though other forms of suicide are unacceptable in Hinduism, prayopavesha is considered in some circumstances to be acceptable. It is viewed as such because it requires time and intense willpower, and therefore cannot be done impulsively. The time of fasting is used to become closer to God and to prepare for death. In contemporary India, both Savarkar and Vinobha Bhave are classic examples of 'prAyopavesha'.
