Oxford Council on Good Governance

The Oxford Council on Good Governance (OCGG) claims to be an independent, non-partisan, and not-for-profit think tank that aims to promote good governance.

The OCGG is run by over 80 postgraduate students and young researchers at Oxford University, Cambridge University, École nationale d'administration, Harvard University, and other world leading universities.

The OCGG aims to promote human rights, the rule of law, democracy, a vital economy, a fair welfare state, sustainable development, global security, international peace, a multipolar world, a strong European Union, multilateral cooperation, a strong United Nations, international law, and progress in education, science, and technology.

They analyse the key issues of good governance and design practical recommendations. The purpose of the organization is to present actionable advice to the main players at the commanding heights of politics and government. They have so far presented proposals on United Nations reform, the European Union constitution, EU space policy, Guantanamo Bay, corporate governance, and an advice against EU memberhip for Turkey. Neither the UN nor other targeted agencies have so far responded to these proposals in public.

In addition to its advisory projects, in 2004 the OCGG started to publish the Oxford Journal on Good Governance (editor-in-chief André Nilsen). This is a non-academic and policy-oriented journal. The first issue on the European Security Strategy was sponsored by the Economist. It presents arguments and analysis related to European security by policy-makers such as Javier Solana, Chris Patten, and Doug Bereuter and by prominent academics.

The Board of Advisors of the OCGC includes three Nobel Peace Laureates, five members of the European Commission, and other notable persons such as Joseph Stiglitz, Joseph Nye, Hans Blix, Mohamed ElBaradei, Giuliano Amato, Stanley Hoffmann , and Elmar Brok. The chairman of the Board of Advisors is Chris Patten, Chancellor of Oxford University.

The chairman and managing director of the Oxford Council on Good Governance is André Nilsen.
