Opie and Anthony
Opie (Gregg Hughes, 1965- ) and Anthony (Anthony Cumia, 1963- ) are current hosts of the satellite radio program 'The Opie and Anthony Show.' The show is based in New York City and airs on XM Satellite Radio. The show was previously on WNEW-FM in New York and WAAF-FM in Boston (whom they obsessively insult) previous to that.
Opie and Anthony's rude and crude style of entertainment (which many listeners support nonetheless) has earned them the sobriquet of "shock jocks" (see also: Howard Stern). Regular guests to their show include Jay Mohr, Jim Breuer, Lewis Black and Jim Norton. On the show, Anthony is known for his impressions of people such as Andrew Dice Clay, Tom Brokaw, Ronald Reagan, Mike Tyson and Tony Danza. Their style and jokes target the males in the 18-25 age range, although they have broken both constraints and have taken over in markets when syndicated and the city already had a show geared toward that style.
The pair signed a contract with XM on August 5, 2004 and started broadcasting October 4th of the same year. Their return was over two years after their previous show had been cancelled (see below), and they had remained off-the-air during that time as Infinity Broadcasting, their previous employer, held them to their contract as well as their no-compete clause. On XM satellite radio, O&A are no longer bound by FCC regulations regarding language and content, thus curses and pollitically incorrect humor are common on their show.
Their XM show features Jim Norton as a regular show host instead of a guest.
Radio Show (High/Low)lights
- Most famously, they created Whip'em Out Wednesdays (WoW), where they encourage women to flash motorists who have a WoW bumper sticker. In the absence of a bumper sticker, Opie and Anthony have suggested writing WoW on their dirty cars using their hands. Eventually, WoW applied to any day of the week ("Whip'em Out Whenever").
- They also invented the Tuesday Night Hummer club where they encouraged their female listeners to perform fellatio on their significant others.
- They were fired in Boston after they pulled an April Fool's prank, telling their listeners the Mayor of Boston (Thomas Menino) died in a car accident (1998).
- Several members of their crew (including frequent guest Lewis Black and Jim Norton) were arrested for being on the see-through "Teen" Voyeur Bus where six young women were flashing all over Manhattan (2000).
- They had an annual Sex For Sam contest, in conjunction with Sam Adams brewery , where listeners would perform in a sexual olympics, which consisted of having sex in different places around New York City for points, with an optional "backdoor" 2-point-conversion. Finally on August 15, 2002, the contest caused their show to be cancelled when a couple was allegedly caught having sex at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
- On October 4, 2004, Opie and Anthony returned to radio via XM Radio channel 202. They started "from scratch", with none of their old bits, one sound clip for their sound board, no "inappropriate bell" (which changed by hour 3), and construction still happening in the studio. Their show, which was planned to kick off exactly at 6:00 am on the first day, was 6 minutes late, when Ecstacy of Gold from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (a la Metallica) played accompanied by a montage of happenings to them. It then kicked off with their trademark start, Rage Against The Machine's Street Fighting Man, and their first words were the famous last words of many a O&A guest, "Your mom's box".
- In November 2004, O&A listeners invaded a rally for Howard Stern and XM's rival company, Sirius Satellite Radio. About 30 listeners of the boys came with placards and WoW stickers, supported by the XM Opie and Anthony van, in response/spite of Howard and the 1,000 of his listeners that showed up to pick up free Sirius units and vouchers for a free radio with purchase of a 1 year subscription.
- During December, 2004, Opie and Anthony re-appeared for the first time on commercial FM radio since they were fired from WNEW. WAQX in Syracuse, New York was the first station to bring O&A back to commercial Fm radio. The show on WAQX was a rebroadcast of the previous day's show on XM and was edited for content. It aired in the Howard Stern show's morning time slot while he was on vacation.
- During the last week of December, 2004, Opie and Anthony aired a tape of former WKTU VP and then current WNEW program director Frankie Blue doing 30 minutes of radio after sending DJ Yvonne Velasquez home. Blue had been at WNEW's holiday party, and he was apparently inebriated during the broadcast. Blue called the station "WKTU" at least once, slurred his speech, and allegedly said the F word (although he might have hiccupped the word "find"). Blue was put on a "previously scheduled vacation" and was then fired in early January. The source of the tape is not known, but many think that long-time friend and WNEW employee Earl Douglas (known as "Black Earl" due to the fact he wears all black, and he's also black, further adding to the joke) was the one that sent the tape, although there are other "spies" for the show present in the company (including at WXRK, Howard Stern's home station).
