Olimpia Milano

Olimpia Milano is a basketball team, based in Milan, Italy.

History:
Olimpia was founded in 1936 by Adolfo Bogoncelli, a rich self-made man of Milan, with colors Red and White.
Olimpia players were then known with the nickname of Scarpette Rosse (Red Shoes) as president Bogoncelli imported the (red) Converse All-Star shoes from the Usa for the team. They're still called Scarpette Rosse.
Olimpia was the first European basketball team to have a sponsor on the t-shirts: the first one being Borletti. From 1936 to 1955 Olimpia "Borletti" Milano won 9 Italian Leagues, with great players as Castelli, Paganella, Canetta, Ricky Pagani and Sandro Gamba .
In 1956 the sponsor was Simmenthal; in 1957 the first foreign player played for Olimpia: the Greek Stephanidis.
From 1956 to 1972 Olimpia "Simmenthal" Milano won 10 more Italian Leagues; and on April 1st, 1966 it won its first European Champions Cup . Great players of those years were Nane Vianello, Sandro Riminucci , Pieri, Bill Bradley (then great NBA player and today Senator of the USA).
In the 60's and the 70's three teams were fighting across Europe for supremacy: Olimpia Milano, Ignis Varese (Varese is 40 kms far from Milan) and Real Madrid; Olimpia couldn't outstand in Europe, but achieved several trophys in Italy, sharing the honors with Varese.
In 1973 the team became Olimpia "Innocenti" Milano, in 1976 Olimpia "Cinzano" Milano.
The end of 70's were bad years for Olimpia. Milano fell in Second League, but still was able to win a Cup Winner's Cup. Things changed since 1976 with the American head coach Dan Peterson . With the new sponsor (Billy), Olimpia was again among the best teams.
Adolfo Bogoncelli sold in 1980 his "loved daughter" Olimpia to Gabetti family, that suddenly signed Dino Meneghin, probably the best Italian player ever. In the 80's more great players played for Olimpia "Billy" Milano: Mike D'Antoni , John Gianelli , Roberto Premier , the Boselli twins, Renzo Bariviera , Ferracini and Gallinari. Bob MacAdoo , Joe Barry Carrol , Russel Shoene , Antoine Carr , Mike Brown follwed.
From 1980 to 1989 the Olimpia changed many sponsors (Billy, Simac, Tracer, Philips) but was able to win trophys both in Italy and across the World; they played 9 finals for the Italian Championship in 10 years and won 5.
In 1987, Olimpia "Tracer" Milano made the Grand Slam, winning the Italian League, the European Championship, the Italian Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.
In 1993 the Olimpia "Philips" Milano won another Korac Cup with led by point-guard Sasha Djordjevic .
In 1994 the Gabettis sold Olimpia to Bepi Stefanel who inked, among the others, great players as Dejan Bodiroga, Censored page, Sandro De Pol , Nando Gentile .
In 1996 season, Olimpia "Stefanel" Milano won the Italian Cup and its 25th Italian National Chanpionship, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the club. From 1998 to 2004 Olimpia changed many presidents, sponsors and players; among the latters are Warren Kidd , Hugo Sconochini , Claudio Coldebella and Petar Naumoski .
In 2004 the club was sold to a pool of Milan citizens: Adriano Galliani (President of A.C. Milan football club), Massimo Moratti (vice president of Internazionale F.C.), the famous stylist Giorgio Armani and with the sponsor support of important industries like Adecco , Sony, RAS , Gabetti and Digit.
