The New College Democrats is a campus organization of New College of Florida affiliated with the Sarasota County Democratic Party and the College Democrats of America. The organization is one of the strongest Democratic organizations in the Sarasota/Bradenton area.
The New College Democrats was reconstituted on November 13, 2003. On November 20, 2003, the new constitution was formally ratified, setting the date of the official reformation of the organization. The Convention was held soon afterwards, at which members of the Standing Committee were elected.
The New College Democrats have sponsored several successful events, including a December 4, 2003 candidate forum and debate featuring Democratic challengers to Rep. Katherine Harris in Florida's 13th US Congressional District: Jan Schneider (http://www.votejan.com/), a former Yale Law classmate of Bill and Hillary Clinton, attorney CJ Czaia (http://cjczaiaforcongress.com/), and college professor Floyd Jay Winters (http://www.winters2004.org/).
On August 25, 2004 the New College Democrats hosted a public forum and debate among the three announced Democratic candidates contending for the Florida's U.S. Senate seat (currently held by retiring Democratic Sen. Bob Graham). [1] Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas showed up and was endorsed by the New College Democrats. [2] [3]
In addition to holding more candidate forums, on October 18, 2004, the New College Democrats hosted veteran civil rights leader Omali Yeshitela, one of the most prominent guests to come on campus in the college's history. [4]
