Mike Conaway, a Republican from Texas who represents the Waco, Texas area (11th Congressional district
(map)), was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2004. He was born June 11, 1948 in Borger, Texas, though he calls Midland, Texas home. He is married to Suzanne Conaway and has four children.
Prior to his election to the United States Congress, Conaway was an accountant, a chief financial officer at a bank and at an oil and gas exploration firm. He also served on the Midland School Board from 1985-1988.
Conaway is one of several new Texas Republicans added to the House during the 2004 elections as a result of redistricting in Texas. The House Republican leadership was particularly keen to use redistricting to center power in Midland because of its seat as the economic capital of the oil- and gas-rich Permian Basin.
Conaway, one of the few Certified Public Accountants in Congress, has close ties to George W. Bush. The two are approximately the same age and mixed in the same social circles in Midland. From 1981 until 1986, Conaway was the chief financial officer of Bush's failed Arbusto Energy Inc.
