Michael Dorris (January 30, 1945 - April 10, 1997) was a prominent Native American author who committed suicide.

His most famous works include The Broken Cord and A Yellow Raft in Blue Water.

He was married to author Louise Erdrich.

He was the father of childen with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, it is the major problem in "The Broken Cord".
