Michael C. Burgess

Michael C. Burgess (born December 23, 1950) is a politician from the state of Texas, currently representing the state's 26th Congressional district (map) in the U.S. House.

Burgess was born in Rochester, Minnesota and graduated from North Texas State University. Burgess worked in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for over 20 years. Burgess made his first run for elective office in the Republican primary to fill the seat of Congressman Richard Armey. Burgess faced Congressman Armey's son, Scott Armey. Burgess finished with 23% in the primary, but Armey failed to win a majority of the votes, only gaining 45% of the vote, so they advanced to the runoff election. Before the runoff was held, the Dallas Morning News reported on Armey using his position to get county jobs and contracts for his friends. Burgess was also endorsed by his fellow physicians. He beat Armey by a 55%-45% margin in the runoff. Burgess won the general election by a large margin over a Democrat whose son he had delivered. Burgess ran for re-election in 2004 and won by a 2-to-1 margin in his district.

(Not to be confused with the Michael Burgess who is the coroner pledging to get to the bottom of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales)
