The Mexican Federal District or Distrito Federal ("DF") is an area within the nation of Mexico that is not part of any of the States of Mexico, but is administered by the Mexican Federal Government. The core of the vast Mexico City conurbation is within the Federal District.
The state of México borders the DF on three sides, with the state of Morelos to the more rural and mountainous south. The pear-shaped Federal District covers a surface area of 1,479 km², with a population of some 8,591,000 according to the year 2000 census.
For local government purposes, executive power is wielded by the Head of Government of the Federal District. The DF is divided into 16 boroughs (delegaciones):
-
Álvaro Obregón, Azcapotzalco, Benito Juárez, Coyoacán, Cuajimalpa, Cuauhtémoc, Gustavo A. Madero, Iztacalco, Iztapalapa, Magdalena Contreras, Miguel Hidalgo, Milpa Alta, Tláhuac, Tlalpan, Venustiano Carranza, and Xochimilco.
Each delegación is further divided into a variable number of neighborhoods (colonias). See also: Boroughs of the Mexican Federal District.
In the event that the Federal Government moves to another location, by constitutional mandate the Federal District would become a State called "Estado del Valle de México" (State of the Valley of Mexico)
