Melvin Dummar was the man who claimed that in 1968, he had picked up millionaire Howard Hughes as a hitchhiker. He claimed that, at the end of the ride, Hughes made "Melvin DuMar" inheritor of one-sixteenth of the Hughes estate.
Subsequent court proceedings found Dummar's claims to be fraudulent. The movie Melvin and Howard further examines this story.
However, in early 2005, retired FBI agent Gary Magnesen claimed to have found new evidence that Dummar's story was factual. Magnesen stated that Hughes's employees remembered the reclusive Hughes leaving his hotel in 1968 and stating that he had been picked up by Dummar.
