Magnate is a title of nobility commonly used in Sweden, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and some other medieval empires.

In medieval times, a bishop sometimes held territory as a magnate, collecting revenue of the manors and the associated knights fee s. The income was superior compared with the wage of other common peasants.
