Liselotte von der Pfalz

Elisabeth Charlotte von der Pfalz (Charlotte Elizabeth, Duchesse d'Orléans), (May 27, 1652 in Heidelberg - December 8 1722 in St. Cloud near Paris) was the Duchesse d'Orléans and sister-in-law of Louis XIV.

Her parents were Karl I. Ludwig and Charlotte of Hesse-Kassel . In 1671, she was married against her will to the Duke Philipp I d'Orléans . As the Wittelsbach line of Pfalz-Simmern (Palatinate-Simmern) was extinct in 1685, Liselotte's brother-in-law Louis XIV claimed the Palatinate and started the War of the Palatinian Succession (Pfälzer Erbfolgekrieg ). After the death of Louis XIV her son Philipp II of Bourbon (her husband already died in 1701) became Regent of France (1715 - 1723) in place of underage king Louis XV - and Liselotte First Lady of the Kingdom. The descended from Liselotte and Philipp form the house Orléans which with Louis-Philippe inherited the French throne in 1830.

Liselotte's letters - mostly written to her aunt Sophie, Princess of Hanover, and her half-sister, Countess Luise zu Pfalz (1661-1733) - about the costumes and morals at the French court are still existing.
