French frigate L'Entreprise

(Redirected from L'Entreprise)

The French Navy ship, l'Entreprise was a 24-gun frigate which was captured in May 1705 by the British vessel Tryton . She is the first confirmed vessel to have been christened with the name Enterprise, but her history of service is unknown before the date of her capture. It is thought likely that she served in the Mediterranean Sea.

After her capture by the British, she was re-christened Enterprise and served in the British Royal Navy as a sixth-rate, or jackass frigate until she was wrecked October 12,1707 near Thornton, England.

Characteristics of l'Entreprise

  • Displacement: 320 tons
  • Length: 110 feet
  • Beam: 28 feet
  • Draft: 15 feet

Other French "Enterprises"

The French Navy held, between 1671 and 1846, at least 23 sailing vessels christened with the name l'Entreprenant, French for "Enterprising".
