The King Fahd Causeway is the combined bridging and dam connection between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain settled on by a construction agreement signed July 8th 1981. Construction started after the placing of the cornerstone on November 11th 1982 by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al-Khalifa of Bahrain and went until 1986 when the combination of several bridges and dams was completed. The project, completely financed by Saudi Arabian money, cost a total of USD $1.2 billion. The four lane road (25 m) is 25-26 km long and used 350,000 m³ of concrete along with 147,000 t of reinforcing steel. The causeway officially opened for public use on November 25th 1986.
