Killeen, Texas

Killeen is a city located in Bell County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 86,911.

Killeen is directly adjacent to the main cantonment of Fort Hood.

Geography

Killeen is located at 31°6'20" North, 97°43'36" West (31.105591, -97.726586)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 91.7 km² (35.4 mi²). 91.6 km² (35.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.14% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 86,911 people, 32,447 households, and 22,972 families residing in the city. The population density is 949.3/km² (2,458.9/mi²). There are 35,343 housing units at an average density of 386.0/km² (999.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 45.78% White, 33.49% African American, 0.78% Native American, 4.33% Asian, 0.91% Pacific Islander, 8.99% from other races, and 5.72% from two or more races. 17.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 32,447 households out of which 42.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% are married couples living together, 13.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% are non-families. 22.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 16.0% from 18 to 24, 35.7% from 25 to 44, 13.6% from 45 to 64, and 4.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 100.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $34,461, and the median income for a family is $36,674. Males have a median income of $26,502 versus $21,799 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,323. 12.9% of the population and 11.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.5% of those under the age of 18 and 8.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
