Kalush

Kalush (in Ukrainian Калуш; Polish Kalusz, Yiddish קאַלוש Kalush or Kalish) is a city in Southwest Ukraine incorporated in 1939. Population 63,800 (2004). Set in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, it lies near Ivano-Frankivs'k, formerly part of Austria-Hungary and Poland.

From the 16th Century, there has been a strong Jewish presence in the city, but in 1941, it was "ethnically cleansed" by the Nazis. 1
