Jasper, Indiana

Jasper is a city located in Dubois County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,100. The city has been the county seat of Dubois County, since 1830, succeeding Portersville. In 1970 the school system of Ireland, a hamlet west of Jasper along State Route 56, was consolidated into that of Jasper [1].

Supercentenarian Minnie Kearby, oldest resident of Indiana, is perhaps Jasper's best-known current resident; born in Ireland in April 1893, she moved to a Jasper care facility in November 2004.

Jasper is located at 38°23'43" North, 86°55'58" West (38.395306, -86.932706)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.0 km² (9.3 mi²). 23.9 km² (9.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.43% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,100 people, 4,875 households, and 3,188 families residing in the city. The population density is 506.7/km² (1,311.8/mi²). There are 5,107 housing units at an average density of 213.9/km² (553.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.00% White, 0.25% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.54% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 3.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,875 households out of which 32.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% are non-families. 29.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $42,051, and the median income for a family is $52,634. Males have a median income of $36,415 versus $22,484 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,547. 5.6% of the population and 3.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Unusual Local Time

To prevent traffic jams at shift changing time, the many furniture factories in Jasper have each adopted a different internal time, offset some number of minutes from standard time. Thus when all the clocks in that business say it is 9:00, it may really be 8:48 in the outside world.
