J-Cart

The J-Cart was a special cartridge developed by Codemasters for the Mega Drive/Sega Genesis that increased SEGA's 16-bit console from two joypad ports to four. While the other alternatives (EA's 4-Way Play and the official SEGA Multitap) required the purchase of an external acessory and were not compatible between each other (games were designed for only one of the systems), Codemasters' special cart had two extra joypad jack-ins built in. This effectively allowed four players to play simultaneously without any adapters or workarounds (Micro Machines alowed four players using two gamepads, each player used only the d-pad or the buttons).
