Intergalactic space

(Redirected from Intergalactic medium)

Intergalactic space is the physical space between galaxies. Generally free of dust and debris intergalactic space is very close to a vacuum with an average density of less than one atom per cubic meter. The primary method of energy transfer in intersteller space is by radiation as opposed to convection or conduction.

Intergalactic space is filled with the intergalactic medium (IGM). This is composed of a hot extremely tenous gas of mostly hydrogen.
