In the fictional Star Wars trilogy, the Imperial Senate replaced the Galactic Senate of the Old Republic, run by corrupt and greedy bureaucrats, with Palpatine as emperor. In Episode IV: A New Hope, it is told by Grand Moff Tarkin that Palpatine, who began to see that the Senate would support the Rebellion, dissolved the Senate and all that remains of the Old Republic, putting him in complete control of the Galactic Empire.
