Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting

Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, or IRIB, is the Iranian organization in control of radio and television.

According to Article 175 of the Iranian constitution, private broadcasting is forbidden. Prior to the Islamic Revolution, IRIB was known as the National Iranian Radio and Television, or NIRT.

The constitution further specifies that the director of the organization is chosen directly by the Supreme Leader for 5 years, and two representatives from The Judiciary, The President, and The Parliament, each, are to oversee the organization. The current director is Ezzatollah Zarghami . The previous directors included Ali Larijani and Mohammad Hashemi .

The constitution clearly stipulates:

"The freedom of expression and publication of ideas in the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting must be in line with Islamic laws and national interests."

IRIB has branches in 17 countries, including the USA, and broadcasts in more than 25 languages.
