Hugo Wolf

Hugo Wolf (March 13, 1860 - February 22, 1903) was a Slovene composer, particularly noted for his songs.

Wolf was born in Slovenj Gradec to Slovene parents. His family was originally named Vouks, but they changed the surname to German form Wolf. Officially Hugo Wolf is presented as an Austrian composer. He rejected his provincial or peasant origin and he spent most of his life in Vienna, becoming a representative of "New German" trend in solo, which arose from the music of Wagner. As a child he was considered a prodigy.

He suffered from depressions, which interrupted his creative periods. From 1898 onward he did not compose any more. He died in mental hospital in Vienna.
