Highland Park, Los Angeles, California

Highland Park is a neighborhood of northeast Los Angeles. One of the oldest neighborhoods in Los Angeles, Highland Park is located along the Arroyo Seco between Pasadena on the north and Lincoln Heights on the south, just off the Pasadena Freeway. Due to the rising real estate prices in Southern California and its close proximity to central Los Angeles, Highland Park is an area of Los Angeles that is currently undergoing gentrification, though much of it is still rather below par, and gang activity is a major problem.

The major street that runs through Highland Park is Figueroa Street (which runs roughly south to north through Highland Park), which is intersected along its length by a series of numbered Avenues (i.e. Avenue 41, 42, 43, 45, etc.) which run roughly from west to east, but many cross at other angles. The infamous Avenues Gang (Avenue 43rd) has its origin in these streets.

Highland Park's geography is characterized by its surrounding hills, which make it a scenic area. There are many parks in the area, including Highland Park and Sycamore Park. The Southwest Museum (a collection of Native American artifacts) is located in Mount Washington, another district that is immediately adjacent.
