Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,295 people, 8,081 households, and 5,955 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.71% White, 4.53% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
